Children's Chatter

Friday, July 07, 2006

For those with an appreciation for the humor, the simplicity, and the creativity of children, I share this bond with you.

One morning, I made my 3 and 5 year old's favorite breakfast - Cocoa Wheats. It is a hot breakfast cereal flavored with chocolate. While they were happily eating, I dashed upstairs to make beds. Within minutes, I heard laughing and assumed my children were enjoying their breakfast conversation. When the noise grew louder, I raced down the steps. Nothing could have prepared me for what I saw. My children had dumped their bowls of Cocoa Wheats onto the floor and were jumping in the piles. Chocolate cereal was oozing down the ceiling, the drapes, the walls, and the floor was covered with a sticky mess. When I asked my children what they were doing, they simply replied, "Mommy, we were just jumping in chocolate puddles."

Needless to say, some of the cereal never came unglued from the walls that morning. But I have smiled numerous times remembering this ingenious event.

  • Wiggly Worms

My 4 year old daughter is caring and nurturing. During the spring rains, there is an abundance of worms wriggling across the sidewalk. This concerns my daughter, so she daily checks for worms that may be struggling or dying on the pavement. One day my daughter said to me, "Mama, those worms just need a little mud and a little love."

If only everything in life could be solved that easily!

  • White Rabbit's Jacuzzi

My 4 year old daughter's favorite bedtime story is White Rabbit's Color Book by Alan Baker. In this story, White Rabbit discovers red, yellow, and blue tubs of paint. As the rabbit hops from the tubs, he forms new colors. The rabbit then washes himself off in the shower.

However, in the middle of the story, when the rabbit tries to wash off the green paint, he says, "Oh dear, no more water." At this point, my daughter blurts out, "Mom, that white rabbit can just use my Jacuzzi."

Now that my child, is problem-solving!

  • Boo Boos and Band-aids

Children are all mesmerized by their assortment of scratches, bumps, and bruises. Asking a group of children to tell their latest boo boo stories can instantly insure all hands will be raised. As mothers we know the magnificent power of a band-aid and a kiss.

Discussing boo boos becomes a daily topic of conversation as a mom. One day I showed my 3 year old one of my cuts that had healed. My little one was so pleased when I told her that God healed my boo boo that she said, "When I get a little bit closer to God, I'm going to give Him a great, big smooch!"

  • Raindrops

One of the rules in my house is: no splashing water outside the bathtub. Despite several harsh reminders, this always seems to be forgotten in the midst of water play.

Water rules were especially not remembered one morning. My 2 and 4 year old were in the tub playing as I wandered into the next room. It was then that I heard a downpour of water, followed by giggles. As I strode into the room, it looked at if a monsoon had completely drenched the bathroom. Water dripped from the ceiling, streamed down the walls, and puddled on the floor.

With agitation at my childrens' obvious disregard for water rules, I asked them why they were throwing cups of water out of the tub. To this they sweetly responded, "Mommy, we were trying to make raindrops."

The ceiling continued to drip-drop for several hours. This made me realize that it really can rain inside.
